Hair Loss

What is Regaine (minoxidil)?

Regaine is a brand name for minoxidil, which is a topical treatment used to help promote hair regrowth and slow down hair loss. It’s most commonly used for conditions like androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness). Minoxidil works by stimulating hair follicles and improving blood flow to the scalp, which can help revitalize hair growth. Regaine is available in different forms, like a foam or solution, and is typically applied directly to the scalp. For best results, it needs to be used consistently over several months, and while it can help manage hair loss, it doesn't work for everyone or stop the condition completely. If you stop using it, the hair loss may resume. It is an effective hair-loss pharmacy medicine, which has been proven to reduce hair loss and encourage hair growth. It has been proven to be effective for 60% of men. It is the first and only topical treatment licensed for hair loss in the UK.

How Does Regaine (minoxidil) Work?

Regaine (minoxidil) is the only over the counter medicinal treatment proven to help stop and even reverse hereditary hair loss. It comes as a topical formulation, which needs to be applied to the scalp twice a day. The cycle of hair growth undergoes three main phases: The growth phase, transitional phase and resting phase (when there is no hair growth). Hair loss is caused by changes to this cycle, whereby more hair is loss than it is replaced. This can occur when:

  • more hair follicles enter the resting phase
  • the resting phase lasts longer
  • the growth phase gets shorter

Regaine works by stimulating hair follicles to move from resting phase to growth phase. It also increases the length of the growth phase. The resting phase normally lasts 6 weeks in a healthy hair follicle. Therefore, it is important to use Regaine regularly for at least that amount of time or longer in order to see results of hair growth. Results may be seen within 8 weeks, and may take up to 16 weeks to show.

Regaine also dilates the blood vessels, allowing more oxygen, blood and nutrients to the hair follicle. This encourages hair to grow. Regaine increases the diameter of the hair shaft, which encourages the thickness of the follicles, so that hair growth is fuller.

Regaine has proven to prevent hair loss in 4 out of 5 men and re-grows hair in 9 out of 10 men. The foam application can be part of men’s everyday grooming routine as it is easy to use, it is unscented and dissolves into the scalp quickly.

What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern baldness is a common condition, which affects over 6.5 million men in the UK.

Is your brush or comb raking out more hair than usual? And are you also noticing thinning on top or perhaps a more pronounced hairline at the sides? Although it’s possible that this loss could be caused by a medical disorder, prescribed medication, poor nutrition, bad hair care techniques or severe stress, in 95% of cases the cause is hereditary – and is known as male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia.

In the case of hereditary hair loss, the genes and hormones in your body have a shrinking effect on your hair follicles, making them ineffective at growing new hairs. Over time, the progressive shrinking of certain scalp follicles leads to a shortening of the hair's growing cycle. Hair becomes thinner and shorter, until there is no growth at all.

Fortunately, there is something you can do about it. Hereditary hair loss can be effectively treated using Regaine Foam.

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application
  2. Make sure your hair is completely dry before applying
  3. Remove the cap and squeeze the nozzle while holding the can vertically upright to dispense half a capful.
  4. The foam will melt with body heat, so be sure not to handle the product for any longer than you have to
  5. Apply the foam to the affected area and massage gently
  6. Use REGAINE twice a day, 12 hours apart

Minoxidil side effects like irritation and unwanted hair growth appear to be less common with foam versus liquid solutions. Side effects also tend to diminish with continued use as the skin adjusts.
